commercial yeast or malolactic bacteria.
2018 was a long and moderate growing season, free from nail-biting heat spikes and other extremes. The first rain was forecast for September 30th but arrived on the 29th, the day we had decided to pick our last big haul of Zinfandel from VZN-3 before the wet clusters could be affected by botrytis. It was a bonding day for our crew: tractors stuck in fresh mud, realizing we had 3 raincoats for 5 people, and a harvest that turned out to be much bigger than anticipated. We cleaned the last hoses around 9 or 10 pm, and settled in for pizzas and wine together under a leaky awning to recount the days adventure. The VZN-3 fruit turned out to be beautiful and perfectly ripe; this is the first time this block of young-vines has taken a majority share of our Zinfandel offering. Medium-dark ruby and translucent (despite being completely unfiltered), the nose pops with dark cherry and brambly, almost savory raspberry notes. In the mouth it is delicious: bursting but never heavy on the palate, with dark berry notes and a compelling, unmistakably mineral streak.
