commercial yeast or malolactic bacteria.
A warm and sunny year in 2017 saw small clusters and a limited crop of fruit in our two Petite Sirah blocks. When this happens the payoff is big -- an intense, bursting wine -- but the picking decision can be nerve wracking: so much acidity is packed into the low yield of berries, and we wait patiently while it slowly decreases through respiration in the September nights. All the while during the day, the late summer sun is rapidly accumulating sugar through photosynthesis. Somewhere in there is the perfect harmony of sugar and acidity, but the balance point moves quickly; its quite the dance. Fortunately, 2017 was far from Matt Norellis first rodeo, and both intensity and liveliness were captured before alcohol got out of hand. The wine is packed with juicy, dark berry flavors, a hint of cocoa, and is big but balanced with a deft smoothness on the finish.
