Madeira is named after the place it comes from, a volcanic island off the coast of Morocco. It is a fortified wine that is heated or baked during the manufacturing process, yet retains a high level of natural acidity. The Rare Wine Company created a series of remarkable wines to honor our nation's forefathers and introduce a new generation of American wine lovers to Madeira's richness and balance, and its versatility as an aperitif, dessert wine and food wine. The Thomas Jefferson Special Reserve honors America’s earliest wine connoisseur with a Madeira worthy of his passion, a spectacular fusion of elegance and depth, and youth and antiquity. The oldest component in the blend is more than 80 years old, a fact that Jefferson would undoubtedly have appreciated.
94 Points - "Deep and complex, the NV Thomas Jefferson Special Reserve (Rare Wine Company) unwinds in the glass with notes of walnuts, espresso roast, dried fruits, beeswax furniture polish, candied peel and spices. Full-bodied, layered and sumptuously textural, it's built around racy acids and concludes with a long, elegantly bittersweet finish. This is a blend of 10% very old Favilla Vieira Malvasia with the balance dry Madeira." - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)
